Stone overhangs, frequently specified for kitchen peninsulas
and islands, have grown in popularity over the past few years. The
use of stone overhangs is of great concern to us because this involves
potential safety and liability issues. Stone counters weigh between
13 and 18 pounds per square foot. In the event that an internal
fissure is present in the stone (but not discernable to the human
eye), there is risk of the stone cracking and shearing off, possibly
resulting in injury or damage. Therefore, we always recommend steel
supports for overhangs.
For the past eight years Prescott Stone Fabricators has recommended
the use of steel supports that are shaped to follow the contour
of the counter. We engineer, design and fabricate these supports
from 1 to 1 1/4" square steel tubing. The steel is welded into
a frame which is "let in" flush to the top of the base
cabinet or knee wall forming a rigid substructure that creates an
impressive cantilevered appearance.
